Champion beef at Iron County Fair | News, Sports, Jobs

Gracie Peterson, left, won grand champion with Carl Jr. and Ava Bortolini reserve champion with Silo in the 4-H market beef competition Friday at the Iron County Fair in Iron River. It was the third and last Iron County grand champion steer for Peterson, who at 18 is aging out of 4-H competition. “I’m kind of sad,” she said of it being her final competition. “I’m taking it all in.” Her steer weighed in at 1,320 pounds. Peterson also took the top spot with her market hog for the sixth year in a row. The Mansfield Township resident graduated this spring from Forest Park High School and plans to study nursing at Bellin College. Bortolini, 11, earned reserve in only her second year of showing a steer, after placing third at the 2021 fair. She raised Silo on the farm her grandparents, Jerry and Annette Bortolini, have in Crystal Falls. Her steer tipped the scale at 1,405 pounds. The fair continues through Sunday afternoon.
